Early Friday, Alberto Del Rio held a press conference to discuss why he quit WWE, his future and much more.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Del Rio asked to be released from his contract and came to a mutual agreement with the company. WWE’s traditional 90 day no-compete clause doesn’t apply to Del Rio. He’s free to work in Mexico now and will be able to work in the US soon.
  • Del Rio stated he didn’t feel comfortable in WWE anymore and thought about leaving for a couple of months. He wasn’t happy with his second stint with the company and was losing his passion for wrestling in WWE. He felt that he’d done everything in WWE and had nothing left to prove.
  • Del Rio said that he’s in negotiation with AAA, CMLL, and Elite, but doesn’t want to be exclusive to any promotion. He did mention that he’d like to work for Arena Mexico, but would like to keep a limited schedule of around 60 matches a year.
  • Del Rio mentioned that he’s thought about retirement and stated that in around 2 years would be the ideal time to hang up his boots.

Another key element to this press conference was that his real-life girlfriend and WWE Superstar Paige was in attendance, but didn’t speak to any media and wasn’t seen during the presser.

Earlier this week, several websites reported that Paige had been released by WWE officially. Well, according to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, that is not the case… yet.

Meltzer claims that people with knowledge of Paige’s situation are saying that she is basically in the same situation as AJ Lee when CM Punk left the company back then. Meltzer continued that she’s in a very awkward spot with Del Rio being gone and both sides not on the best of terms with the company. Meltzer noted that it did look like she was gone this week, but it seems it’s not the case as of now.

But as Meltzer noted, the relationship between Paige and WWE is rocky at the moment, so anything can happen over the the weekend and the coming weeks.
