On Friday, New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s Tomoaki Honma sustained a scary injury at a recent event where he teamed up with Togi Makabe and Michael Elgin against Jado, Toru Yano and Tomohiro Ishii.

The incident occurred when Jado was getting ready to hit Honma with a DDT, with Honma’s feet hanging on the ropes. When the two performers went to execute the move, one of Honma’s feet got caught up in the ropes, which caused him to land awkwardly on his head.

Here’s a photo from the event:

After a few seconds, Honma was not responding to NJPW officials and fellow performers. Doctors immediately rushed to the aid of Honma, the match was stopped and he was rushed to a local hospital.

At this time, there is no word on his condition. There were some in attendance that claimed that Honma couldn’t feel anything from the neck down, which is obviously horrible news if it turns out to be true.

However, New Japan Pro-Wrestling did release a statement regarding this injury:

“Tomoaki Honma was injured on March 3rd during his match in Okinawa, and immediately rushed to hospital. He was diagnosed to have injured his cervical vertebrae. In order to recover, he will miss the scheduled March 6th IWGP Tag Team title match and his return to the ring is currently tentative. His tag partner, Togi Makabe, has also declined to compete on March 6th. As a result, the IWGP Executive Committee has named Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Satoshi Kojima as the challengers.”
