One of the hottest rumors making the rounds right now is the idea of reigning WWE World Champion AJ Styles taking on Shawn Michaels at the 2017 Royal Rumble event at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, Texas.
AJ spoke to Sports Illustrated Extra Mustard about the rumor:
“I would love the opportunity to wrestle him. I’d love to learn from him, but who’s to say if that’s going to happen. Right now, it’s all speculation and rumors that I’m finding out like everyone else is, but man, what a match that would be.”
The last time WWE visited the Alamo Dome for the Royal Rumble event was in 1997. The event saw Shawn Michaels defeat Psycho Sid in the main event, capturing the WWE Championship. There were over 60,000 people in attendance; the most in Royal Rumble history.
With WWE heading back to the same stadium exactly 20 years later, it would be an extremely interesting story if Shawn Michaels came out of retirement to fight for the WWE World Championship one final time.
